my week with mealpass!

guys, im NOT ready for winter. dont tell summer, but i actually kinda like the snow… its pretty! i do not, however, enjoy commuting in it. ¬†thankfully uber had a special for 50% off uberpool during commuter hours this past week, which worked out perfectly! $3 to get to work? im in. i was going to take one on the way home too, but it was somewhat starting to stop snowing and it looked pretty (plus i was just going home to eat mac and cheese and be a bum aka didnt care if my hair got messed up) so i decided to walk. good. choice.

thats my building behind that tree!

Snow 1.jpg

wintry wonderland
and some nicely shoveled sidewalks. good work beanie.

Snow 5.jpg

i stopped to take one too many pictures (lovingggg my new camera!) so by the time i got home the sun was setting. and WOW. seriously. the entire sky went from white and grey to pink and purple in a matter of minutes. so glad i skipped that uber!

Snow 3.jpg

sunsetthe prettiest! hard to beat a view like that…

whats better than a pretty pink sunset? food, duh ūüôā a couple of weeks ago i got an email asking if id like to¬†attend the launch party for¬†MealPass. for those familiar with ClassPass- it’s kinda similar, except for food! you pay $99 a month (~$5 a meal) and get to pick a lunch every business day from one of ~50 restaurants in the city (primarily downtown.) and, unlike ClassPass, there are no restrictions on how many times you can go to the same place! sweeeet.

the folks at MealPass not only hosted a fun launch with lots of food samples and drinks, but they were also super generous and gave the attendees of the party a free week of their service! i typically bring my lunch during the week (and eat the same. darn. thing. for four days in a row…blah…) so i was pretty stoked about it! lets dive in, shall we?

how it works.

every night at 7pm you get an email from MealPass letting you know your options for tomorrows lunch are available and that you have until 9:30am to make your selection. i really liked that they provided pictures of the items as well- sometimes something can sound super delish on the menu but then when you get it…womp womp… not what you expected. ¬†knowing exactly what i was in for ahead of time was a big pro for me.

Screen Shot 2016-02-06 at 10.39.09 AM.png

once you log in, you click on the picture of the item you want for lunch and then select your pickup time (intervals of 15minutes from 11-3ish). ¬†i will say pick up varied at each place- some asked for my name, some made me sign for my lunch, some didn’t seem to really check anything and just handed me stuff- but either way, i was in and out within a few minutes every time.

the food.

friday: tossed. black forest ham & swiss sandwich.

MealPass 4.jpg

i was super tempted by the zucchini pesto pasta from cocobeet (seen in the email above), but it was kind of far away and gross out. I was going out for drinks that night too so decided to get something healthy but still hearty-¬†sandwich me. i had been to tossed once before (throwback!) and really liked my salad, so was hopeful the sandwich would be good too. ¬†the sandwich was pretty basic, but i liked the grainy bread and that the woman gave me some extra honey dijon on the side (one can never have enough condiments. at least not in my book ūüôā )

would i suggest getting it if you were at tossed? yes!
should you go out of your way to get it? no.
was it a good deal? normal cost: $8.99- yes.

monday: jm curley. curley burger with fries.

MealPass 3.jpg

ah, jm curley. how do i love thee. let me count the ways. im a BIG fan of this spot. great food. great drinks. especially their burger- 5 oz. natural beef patty, griddled onions, cheddar, pop’s russian dressing, pickles. and those fries. YUM. this was an AGGRESSIVE start to the week, but since the options at every restaurant change daily, i couldnt risk not having this one pop up again. devoured.

would i get it again if i was at jm curley? yes!
should you go out of your way to get it? yes. yes. yes.
was it a good deal? normal cost: $13- yes!

tuesday: genes chinese flatbread. handpull noodles.

MealPass 2.jpg

do you like doughy noodles? do you like garlic? if you answered no to either of these, we probably will never be friends. if you answered yes- you must try these noodles.  again, another aggressive lunch pick for a tuesday (note: i refrained from getting on the scale this week) but i didnt want to miss out on these bad boys. so good. warning- they are oily. and it will kinda stick with you for the rest of the day after eating them. but oh, so worth it. plus- you can see them making the noodles right in front of you, which is pretty awesome in my book.

would i get it again if i was at jm genes? yes! (although want to try the lamb curry noodle)
should you go out of your way to get it? yes.
was it a good deal? normal cost: $6- not as great of a deal, but yes!

wednesday: freshii. fiesta salad.

i go out to lunch once a week with t & kp and freshii used to be one of our regular spots (they also have great management!) but we kinda stopped going there.  i cant exactly say why? it just fell out of our rotation.  after eating a burger and noodles, i decided to try something a bit healthier and go with the fiesta salad.  i wasnt sold on the cilantro lime vinaigrette- so was glad to see it on the side (although, there was barely a tablespoon in there, so for those who were using it, kind of a bummer! i just doused it in sriracha.) i liked the flavors in the salad a lot, but it was kinda small and barely any lettuce underneath all the goodies. maybe my stomach was stretched out from the other two meals, but i was hungry again by like 3:30.

would i get it again if i was at freshii? probably not. unless i added a protein.
should you go out of your way to get it? no.
was it a good deal? normal cost: $8.49- yes.

thursday: freshii (again.) spicy lemongrass soup.

MealPass 1.jpg

you didnt really like your lunch there wendesday, why would you go back? because i do loveeee this soup. especially on a cold day. (although, oddly, it was not. it was like 55. typical boston to go from 55 to snow overnight… but i digress…) this soup is comprised of a spicy lemongrass broth (i added in more sriracha- its not normally THAT red), rice noodles, tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, and cilantro. ¬†it definitely fills you up without making you feel disgusting. as a bulk eater, thats always a pro. i will say i barely got any noodles this time (freshii had all the noodle containers filled up and waiting for the mealpassers sans broth… i almost asked for a different one but felt fat doing that… so got stuck with less stuff more broth… dang) but still enjoyed it!

would i get it again if i was at freshii? yes!
should you go out of your way to get it? maybe not, but if youre in the area, try it!
was it a good deal? normal cost: $6.99- not as great a deal, but yes.

overall thoughts.

did i enjoy my week on mealpass? for sure! like i said, i usually make all my lunches for the week on sunday and eat the same thing. every. day. it can get a bit boring by the end of the week. plus, it does require a bit of prep on sunday.  i also liked that most of the 50 places were within a 10 minute walk from my office.

…there were definitely some things i didnt love though. although there were some healthy options, they were usually the smallest options and not usually the best deal (a plain garden or caesar salad with no protein) or just not filling (a smoothie or one california roll.) also, although i totally understand that allowing people to make substitutions would create chaos, i feel like for salads, dressing on the side should be an option when you reserve (or just standard!) i was thankful freshii did that- but it kept me from ordering some of the other salads.

do i think im going to switch over to mealpass? probably not, or ill end up being 500lbs.  but if there were more healthy options, its something i would totally consider.

…phew that was a long one! if you have any questions about my MealPass experience I didn’t answer, you can leave a comment and I’ll (hopefully) be able to answer it for you!¬†and a big thanks again to MealPass for my tasty week of treats!

pizza, pasta and a puffer.

today on a break, i finally decided to bite the bullet and go buy a new winter jacket. ¬†i’ve had my wool jacket for a few years now and although i love it- its pretty worn. and, well, there is so much cat hair embedded in it, it’s beyond being able to lint roll. sexy, huh?

i figured i would go to city sports first since i got an email that they were having a big winter coat sale, but their selection was pretty awful. not sure if it had just been picked over, but there were only a few styles to chose from. from there i went to tjmaxx and marshals, but same deal. drag.

with only a little time left, i headed over to macys. i remembered i read a post on the financial diet recently and there was a black calvin klein coat on sale at macys i liked. of course when i got there, they only had size XS left and there was no chance in hell getting that zippered after the past few months.

tumblr_mtmzhfDrrg1ql5yr7o2_250macys actually had a huge selection to pick through, so i decided my must haves were for it to be slightly longer, have a built in hood and be warm/waterproof (duh.) my wants were faux fur and for it to have some sort of shape/belt so that i didnt end up looking like this guy…

mich man

i tried on a ralph lauren one that i really loved, but i realized that the “hood” was actually just a detachable piece of fur, bummer. so glad i notice that before i left the store! about 50 more jackets later (and being asked if i worked there, twice) i finally stumbled upon this guy! the kensie hooded faux-fur belted puffer¬†(in black).

pufferthe pictures are kinda dark, but based on the name alone you can tell it had a hood (check) faux fur (check) and a belt (check.) it also came about mid thigh, which is an ok length (would have liked a little longer, but that will do) and it was really warm! i think what i liked the most was even though its a puffer, it doesn’t have those michelin man ribs that most jackets have!¬†sold.

also, the jacket was on sale from $240 to $144 (i believe) in the store.  i had gone online quickly on my phone to make sure it had decent reviews (which it did) and noticed that the website had it priced at $109.99. when i checked out, i showed the cashier who gave me the lower price without any further question. thanks macys!

oh and going back to pizza… a few weeks ago, the jana’s headed over to mast’, a new restaurant downtown, for teresas birthday! i’ll start with the positive first- our pizzas were all really good.

the wild mushroom pizza
that i ate entirely by myself. oink.

thats kind of where the positives stop though. despite having a reservation, it took about 10 minutes to be seated. and then probably another 10 minutes for someone to even come over and identify themselves as our waiter. once we got water and bread, we had to go up to the bar and ask or salt/pepper and plates ourselves because they never made it back over. our pizzas also took quite some time- although there was a larger party there, so i’ll cut them a little¬†slack on that.

…oh and then i realized about a month later that despite kristin and i both putting in our cards, the waitress just charged both halves of the “split” to mine. oy. no biggie since we are friends (obvi) and it wasn’t that much- but i could see how that could end up being a problem!

J-Walter-Weatherman-e1369445659677…and thats why you always check your bank statements

since they are still new and the pizza was really good, i’d give them another whirl. but definitely not when i have a time constraint again!

when scanning through my archives of pictures from the past few months, another dish that jumped out was a pasta dish i had from bel ari (which some people may know as the old sorriso.)

rag√Ļ bolognese with pastene mafaldine pasta ($15)

to be honest, i hadn’t realized sorriso closed down and bel ari opened up in its place. after our work holiday party, we were dying needed carbs, and sorisso¬†never disappoints in that arena. saw it had switched over and the lunch menu changed (rather slightly changed) but figured we’d still give it a whirl.

this pasta hit the spot. it was a decent portion for the price and the sauce was on point. t had got the same thing and also enjoyed it. kp got the pizza, which is almost always a winner there. if you’re by south station and looking for a place to sit down and eat lunch, bel ari is always a good choice! really want to try the pici pasta and gnocchi on the dinner menu (and have never been for dinner) so will have to make a stop after work one of these days!

so there’s two meals out of 5,000 i have to recap for you. but for now im off! hope everyone has a great night.

WIAW: a day in the life

i always love reading “day in the life” posts and “what I ate wednesday” posts, so figured id give one a shot! hopefully you enjoy it too. (i mean lets be honest, its fun creeping peeking in on other peoples lives, no?)

3:45am: wake up. i fell asleep way too early on tuesday and now im wide awake. avoid moving so buster doesnt wake up too. read some blogs, reply to a missed text from michelle and send mg a “hello” message (its already mid morning for her!) at some point, fall back asleep.

6:00am: buster is awake and hungry. try to ignore him and go back to sleep. hes meowing at something out the window. i fall back asleep for a few more minutes and dream about pushing him out said window.

1 dark kibber

7:10am: drag myself out of bed. its still dark and raining, but i’ve pressed snooze more times than i should have. feed my stupid cat. (you know hes angry when there’s a sock next to the bowl. i have no idea where he finds them, its like the dryer that eats one sock shoots them out to buster. but seriously, every morning i dont wake up when he wants me to, you can be sure there’s a sock there…. also, there’s a few pieces left in your bowl¬†dummy. eat that to hold you over.)

2 bowl

8:00am: leave for work. know im meeting up with alli and victoria after, so spent a few extra minutes curling my hair. happy with the finished product. (also- loving my new arrested development cell phone case. theres always money in the banana stand!)

3 leave

8:25am: arrive at work. jeez, its a good thing i spent time doing my hair this morning… i hate humidity! isnt that supposed to be the one perk of fall? you lose the sunshine and warmth but you get cool, good hair days? ugh… what a waste…. (also, enjoy my creepy elevator picture. good thing no one else got in… #awkward)

4 arrive 2

8:26am: pit stop in bathroom to make myself look somewhat more presentable. hairs a lost cause, but a little extra bronzer and another coat of mascara never hurt anyone…

8:30am: read through emails from overnight while drinking a coffee, respond where needed.

9:00am: head upstairs for the wednesday morning meeting- my favorite meeting of the week! while i dont play a huge role in this one- i always find it the most interesting (and the most entertaining.) listen. take notes. chime in where needed.

11:15am: meeting is over and im back at my desk. ¬†my stomachs been rumbling since 10-something, so grab my greek yogurt out of the fridge and mix in a tablespoon of teddie peanut butter (super chunky) and a tablespoon or two of oats. per usual, this hits the spot! also, snagged a cookie someones wife made. planned on eating this after lunch, but end up eating¬†it with breakfast. it’s almost noon, so thats ok, right? finish eating and get back to work.

5 breakfast

1:05pm: im definitely not actually hungry, but i dont feel like having a sweet taste in my mouth anymore. was going to have some pizza goldfish, but decided on having wasabi peas (im addicted!) and a diet coke. popped a few in as i plugged along on a project.

6 snack

2:15pm: ok now im actually hungry again. take a little break to heat up some chicken and broccoli. ¬†my favorite chicken happens to be the laziest chicken around- perdue perfect portions with italian seasoning. they cook fast, can be frozen individually, and always come out moist with just the right amount of seasoning. poured some bolthouse farms honey mustard yogurt dressing on the side to dip the broccoli in since its just plain- ive been super lazy with meal planning this week. finish eating in about 2.5 minutes (seriously, i need to stop inhaling my food) and get back to work…

7 lunch

3:00pm: i want something sweet. have piece of pumpkin seed brittle while i read through some notes. this stuff is dangerously good. (and its why whats left is being stored at the office and not at home.) i have another piece, blame my mother for buying it for me, and then get back to work. have to leave on time today, so focus focus focus.

8 dessert

4:30pm: change into jeans, cowboy boots and an old tshirt. spray my hair with some dry shampoo (new-to-me-brand: batiste. i usually stick with pssst.) leave work and head over to international place to meet alli & victoria. we are being good humans and volunteering at the greater boston food bank later tonight. its still gross out. dry shampoo did nothing (not sure if its the brand or the weather.) hoping there are no cute boys volunteering since i look like a mess. (or, if there are, they are cute boys who dont mind messy hair.)

4:45pm: get to one international place. alli and victoria are still finishing up work. i park up in the palm bar. never been there before, but its an awesome space. high ceilings. great cocktails (i got the cucumber lime gimlet- recommend), good company. hello lots of business men.

5:30pm: alli & victoria are able to leave work and we hop in a cab. queue volunteering at the boston food bank. tonight our job is to sort meat into different bins. pork in one. beef in another. alli oddly likes packing up chicken boxes. processed meat (aka hot dogs) is my jam. victoria is just a rockstar.

7:50pm: we have packed 9,065lbs of meat; between all of us volunteering, thats an average of 292lbs a person. and thats enough meat for 7,000 meals. you can’t help but feel good about yourself after that. (you also can’t help but purrell yourself.) alli, victoria and i decide we will start doing this monthly.

7:51pm: victoria and i decide to pose besides the trash meat. because I’ve never seen ground beef turn white before. and the only way for us to not have nightmares about it is to make it a joke.

8:05pm: we try to go to toro for dinner but ::shocker:: theres an hour and a half wait. instead we go across the street to get sushi at a place teresa has recommended to me, seiyo. its half sushi restaurant/half wine shop. two of my favorite things!

8:30pm: we start with wine, salad and edamame. can’t really mess this up, but its good.

8:45pm: i get the sashimi plate and an unagi (eel) roll. both are amazing, especially for the price. ($24 total)

9:30pm: we finish dinner and head across the street to toro. its literally a monsoon. amen there is wine waiting for us on the other side. and churros. my goodness, the churros dipped in chocolate sauce are sooo good.

IMG_09319:45pm: alli determines she doesn’t have a picture of me for her favorites in her iPhone. i determine i also don’t have one of her. queue: candlelight pictures. could she be any prettier? don’t think so. so lucky to have such nice, thoughtful and beautiful friends ūüôā

11:00pm: we finish our bottle of wine and head home. i shockingly (/not shockingly) have 8,000 packages from amazon prime (i blame you stepfaddy.) an iPhone protector screen, cat stuff, new scarf, other assorted random stuff, magazine…this is when a boyfriend comes in handy. this ish is heavy to carry up two flights of stairs!¬†

11:10pm: get everything up into my apartment. change into pjs. write this post. (note: i looked really creepy writing down times all day that i did stuff. but i hoped you enjoyed this! i enjoyed posting it all tonight.)

and now, off to bed. thanks to jenn for hosting WIAW!
